This line of baskets is made using the traditions of the Taita culture in the Tsavo National Park Wildlife Reserve where all life––human and animal––is respected and honored. Our aim is to become less dependent on unpredictable agriculture and more dependent on our artisan talents which is why the baskets are made out of sisal which is grown on farms belonging to the basket weavers. The Taita ladies dye the fibers themselves and then toll the twine on their lap. Making baskets is a very labor-intensive art as each basket is unique, just like the maker. Often, you will find the artist’s name sewn inside the piece, a beautiful reminder of the hands of creation. The baskets are named after the artisan who made them.
Please note that these baskets are handmade. As with anything that is handmade, there are unique variations between products and within different components of our product, however, if you are unsure about something please reach out to our team with questions.
