Why Fashion Isn’t Superficial
Just like art, music, design, or writing, fashion is a creative expression. It is a showcase of personality, a way of expressing ourselves every day. It is a form of street art––I especially love walking around the streets of diverse cities such as New York and seeing what both men and women wear, as you see such a variety. It can show someone’s mood, the phase they are in in their lives, what they do for a living, and what they’re interested in. Fashion is accessible as you can shop at a thrift store, swap clothes with friends, and even make your own. Sure, just like almost anything in life, fashion can be superficial but if someone truly loves something it's never superficial! To someone who just buys to buy it is heartless, but to someone who buys what they love with a lot of intention behind it and uses what they buy time and time again in different ways––it's an expression of art! Not to mention that the thought that goes behind designing each piece is not unlike other artistic processes.
What we fashionistas have to be conscientious of is not over consuming or getting wrapped up in trends. True artists amongst us are the ones who buy pieces that can last a lifetime and that can be used in many different ways. Buying second hand, buying products that last, and making something new out of something old are great ways to extend the life of a closet and show off your artistic flair. Fashion is art if you do it right, and there is no better way to do fashion than to do it right! So enjoy your closet guilt free by making value-aligned choices and getting extra creative. From now on, every time you dress, think of your body as a blank canvas and play with the part of yourself that you show to the world.
